New road transport regulation

From 6th July 2024, all newly registered trailers and semi-trailers in the European Union will have to be equipped with tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), in compliance with EU legislation. This obligation, embodied in Regulation UN-ECE-R-141 and extended to advanced systems such as Tyre Pressure Refill Systems (TPRS) and Central Tyre Inflation Systems (CTIS), aims not only to improve road safety, but also promises significant savings in operating costs.

Thanks to TPMS systems, truck drivers will be able to monitor the tyre pressure of their trailers in real time, ensuring that they are always travelling at optimum values. This constant monitoring reduces rolling resistance, thereby also lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

In addition, maintaining the correct tyre pressure avoids premature tyre wear, prolonging tyre life, reducing vehicle downtime due to punctures and improving the operational efficiency of transport fleets.

Therefore, according to the new Regulation, all new trucks with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tonnes will have to be equipped with a functioning TPMS system, which alerts the driver in case of a predefined pressure variation of more than 20 per cent or when a minimum pressure of 150 kPA is reached.
