Beware of vishing: protect yourself from cyber scams

Have you ever heard about vishing? The term comes from the combination of ‘voice’ and ‘phishing’ and refers to a particularly insidious fraud form, also known as ‘voice phishing’.

Fraudsters use apparently harmless telephone calls to try to obtain personal information and sensitive data, pretending to be financial operators or representatives of trustworthy institutions.

Often, their strategy is based on a convincing approach and apparent urgency, aimed at making the victim let his guard down.

But how can we defend ourselves against these scams? Here are some practical tips to avoid falling into the vishing trap:

  1. Check the caller's identity: do not blindly trust the caller. Ask for the caller's full name, the name of the company he/she works for and a contact number so that you can contact him/her again. If in doubt, take time and verify this information by yourself.

  2. Never share sensitive information: banks and financial institutions never ask for details such as PINs, passwords or access codes over the phone. If someone does, it is most likely a scam.

  3. Keep control of your transactions: regularly monitor your bank account and credit cards to immediately detect any suspicious or unauthorised activity. If you notice anything unusual, contact your bank immediately.

  4. Beware of unexpected calls: if you receive an unsolicited phone call asking you to act instantly, take time to think things over. Scammers often create a sense of urgency to push you into making a hasty decision.

  5. Use double verification: whenever possible, enable two-factor authentication on your bank and e-mail accounts. This adds an extra security layer, making it more difficult for attackers to access your data.

Remember: prevention is your best defence against vishing. Stay vigilant and informed is essential to protect your data, your sensitive information and your money.
